Some signs spell out a name. Some display a logo. And then there are signs like this one — where the sign is the character.
This custom figural marquee sign is one of our most talked-about builds: a full-body cowboy figure, hand-fabricated in layered steel, ringed with warm incandescent bulbs, and finished in a distressed orange-and-brown patina that looks like it was pulled straight off a 1950s roadside attraction. Every detail — the hat, the bandana, the sheriff's star, the cigarette dangling from the corner of his mouth — was custom-cut and assembled by hand. The result is a sign that doesn't just hang on a wall. It occupies a room.
Most marquee signs are rectangular or follow the outline of letters. A figural marquee sign breaks that mold entirely. Instead of a standard shape, the sign is cut and fabricated to match the silhouette of a character, object, or logo — in this case, a full-standing cowboy. The marquee bulbs trace the outer edge of the figure, creating a glowing outline that defines the shape from across a room.
This is one of the most technically demanding sign styles we build. There are no straight lines to work from, no simple geometric forms to follow. Every curve of the hat brim, every angle of the outstretched arm, every detail of the boots has to be translated from a 2D design into fabricated steel — and then wired with individual bulb sockets that follow the contour precisely.
The payoff is a sign that is genuinely one of a kind. No two figural signs are ever the same, because no two characters are ever the same.
Like all of our layered signs, this cowboy was built using our signature multi-layer construction method. The base layer establishes the overall silhouette. A second layer adds depth and dimension to the body, creating the visual separation between the figure and the background. The painted details — the orange shirt, the blue jeans, the red bandana, the gold star — are applied by hand, with a distressed finish that gives the piece its vintage character.
The bulbs are standard incandescent globe bulbs, the same warm-glowing style used in classic theater marquees. They are wired individually around the perimeter of the figure, spaced evenly to create that unmistakable marquee glow. When lit, the cowboy seems to come alive — the warm amber light tracing his outline against whatever wall he's mounted on.
The dark wood plank backdrop in this photo is a favorite of ours for showcasing layered signs. The contrast between the raw wood grain and the painted steel brings out every detail of the finish and makes the bulbs pop.
Figural marquee signs are built for spaces that want to make a statement. We have built them for:
Bars and restaurants that want a signature piece — something guests photograph the moment they walk in and post before they even order a drink.
Entertainment venues that need a visual anchor — a piece that defines the energy of the space and tells visitors exactly what kind of experience they are about to have.
Retail and hospitality brands that want their mascot or logo character brought to life in three dimensions, lit up, and mounted permanently on the wall.
Private collectors and home bars who want something truly custom — a piece of illuminated art that no one else in the world has.
The cowboy is a natural fit for western-themed bars, steakhouses, honky-tonks, and any space that leans into Americana. But figural signs are not limited to any one theme. We have built fish, guitars, crowns, animals, and abstract shapes — if it has a silhouette, we can make it glow.
Every figural marquee sign we build starts with a conversation. We want to understand the space, the brand, the story behind the character, and the effect you want to create. From there, we build a digital mockup so you can see exactly what the finished piece will look like before a single piece of metal is cut.
If you have a character, a mascot, a logo, or an idea — we can build it. Explore our custom sign options at vintagemarqueelights.com or request a custom quote today.
