When Reddit's Snoo Comes to Life: A Custom Layered Marquee Sign for One of the World's Most Iconic Brands

Some logos are so recognizable they barely need a name attached. Reddit's Snoo — the round-headed, antenna-bearing alien mascot — is one of them. The moment you see those red eyes and that simple, almost cartoonish silhouette, you know exactly where you are. What we built is a circular, full-color layered marquee sign featuring Snoo rendered in bold red and white, ringed with warm incandescent bulbs that trace the outer edge of the disc. It hangs on the wall like a piece of art. It also detaches from its stand and hits the road.

The Brand Behind the Sign

Reddit was founded in 2005 by Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian — two University of Virginia students who launched the platform as part of Y Combinator's inaugural batch. What started as a simple link-aggregation site grew into one of the most trafficked websites on the planet, home to tens of thousands of communities covering every conceivable topic. Reddit went public on the New York Stock Exchange in March 2024, opening at $34 per share and closing up nearly 60% on its first day of trading.

Through every phase of that growth, Snoo remained constant. The mascot was originally sketched by Ohanian as a doodle in a college marketing class — a genderless, time-traveling alien that he described as a kind of cosmic observer of human conversation. The name "Snoo" is shorthand for "what's new?" — a fitting identity for a platform built around discovery and discussion. Reddit's Director of Outreach once described Snoo as "a trademark, a mascot, and an important part of the Reddit family." That family now includes hundreds of millions of users and a corporate headquarters at 548 Market Street in San Francisco.

The Build: Layered Metal, Round Form, Removable Stand

This sign is a layered sign — our term for the style of custom sign where multiple layers of precision-cut metal are stacked and assembled by hand to create real dimensional depth. The base layer establishes the circular disc form. A second layer brings the white Snoo figure forward from the red field, creating the visual separation that makes the mascot read clearly from across a room. The red background is painted to match Reddit's brand color, and the white of Snoo's body is crisp and clean against it.

The marquee bulbs run around the full perimeter of the disc, evenly spaced in the classic theater-marquee tradition. When lit, the warm glow of the incandescent bulbs creates a halo effect that makes the sign feel alive — less like a logo on a wall and more like a piece of illuminated sculpture.

What makes this particular build especially versatile is the removable stand. The sign is designed to mount on the wall for everyday use at Reddit's offices — a permanent anchor for the space that greets employees and visitors alike. But when Reddit hosts an event, the sign lifts off the wall mount and drops onto a freestanding base, transforming it into a centerpiece for brand activations, company gatherings, and off-site events. One sign, two configurations, zero compromise on impact.
